OPP Advising
Public: 9-1-1 is for Emergencies Only But it is Not
Accessible in all areas of the Province!
Do not call OPP Communication Centres
or dial 9-1-1- for road conditions and road closures. These calls tie up emergency lines and may
cause a delay in responding to those who need help immediately .That’s
the message the Ontario
Provincial Police is sending to the public.
This time of the year there will be many traveling
throughout the province and entering areas that may not have 911 services.
This maybe a shock to those whom live in the more southern portion of the
province but they need to realize that this is reality when visiting in some
northern communities.
9-1-1 is the emergency telephone number that connects you
to Police, Fire or Ambulance in an emergency situation. Calling 9-1-1 helps you reach emergency services when you
require immediate assistance. An
emergency is any situation when the safety of people or
property is at risk and requires immediate assistance. Examples of 9-1-1 emergencies include: a crime in progress, a fire
or a medical emergency or simply, whenever police,
fire or ambulance assistance is required immediately.
There are some communities that
are unorganized townships thus no council or service board to request or sign
a contract for a 911service provider. This being the case you will call 911
and find the # is not in service. There will be local phone # for ambulance
and for the Ontario Provincial Police the province wide # is
1-888-310-1122. Marter Township is one of those unorganized townships and does not have
a 911 service. The ambulance phone # for this area is 544-7777. If you are
visiting an area it might be best to check with the local people or phone
book to confirm if there is a 911 service available in the area. Please do
not test the phone to see if 911 works in that area as this would be an
improper use of the 911 #.
The above mentioned type of call
or prank 9-1-1 calls
defers operators from answering real emergency calls. If 9-1-1 lines or responders are busy with prank or non-emergent
calls, someone with a real emergency might not get the immediate help that
they need. It is against the law to
call 9-1-1 as a joke.
911 should also not be used for
non-emergent type calls such as: reporting a hydro outage, to obtain
government information, for directory assistance, for information about
school closings, or for directions, to name a few.
For non-emergent calls for
service to the OPP the following numbers may be used:
1-888-310-1122 - O.P.P. (24-hr
toll-free) or your local detachment during regular business hours (numbers
are listed in the phone book)
1-888-310-1133 - O.P.P., TDD/TTY
telephone (24-hour toll-free)
TIP: a situation when the safety of people or property is not
Don’t program 9-1-1
into your home or cellular phones.
There is a greater potential for dialing error and no significant time
saved as an autodial number. Finally,
lock your cell phone when not in use so it does not accidentally dial
911. A great deal of time and/or
effort is wasted when this occurs.

Bear Safety
It’s that time of the year were bears are looking
for food and you may find yourself being visited by one of our furry friends.
In the Temiskaming area we have had several bears
being spotted and certain precautions need to be taken.
The best way to reduce bear problems is prevention. If you
are having bears coming around your property you need to look at what is
attracting them to your home or business and what could you do to discourage them.
In order to reduce the likelihood of being visited by
bears there are many things you can do to “bear proof’ your
property.
Store garbage in steel containers, or in airtight
containers inside a storage area that is not accessible to bears.
Put garbage out on the morning of collection, not the
night before.
Wash garbage containers and dumpsters frequently and use
disinfectant to deduce odours.
Wait until fall to fill birdfeeders.
Do not leave pet food outdoors.
Clean outdoor grills after every use.
Rinse containers before disposal and recycling.
Do not feed wild animals.
Remove a hummingbird feeder if there are bears in the
area.
When bears come around your property it may start off as
being a nuisance and if this is the case you need to call the Ministry of
Natural Resources at the bear wise program number 1-866-514-2327. For your
safety and the safety of the bear keep your distance and remember they are
wild animals.
The bear can pose a threat very quickly and when this
occurs you need to contact your local police for immediate assistance call
911.
Remember that the area that we live in is the bear’s
home as well, they need space, shelter and food.
Please give them the respect they deserve and give them a chance by bear
proofing your property.
