                       TRAFFIC SAFETY

Speeding, aggressive driving, non-use of seatbelts or child safety restraints and driving while fatigued will be the main focus for the Temiskaming OPP officers in their efforts to help keep you safe while traveling the roadways.

Officers will be watching closely the speed of vehicles on the highways in attempts to slow down the traffic. The higher the speed the more severe the impact and even a small reduction in speed can make a big difference in a driver’s ability to avoid a collision. You can also be assured that the members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police will be taking a no nonsense approach to tailgating and other aggressive driving behaviour that tend to force other road users into dangerous situations.

Aggressive driving can happen at any time and in any location. If you see someone driving in an aggressive manner call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or a free call on your cell phone is * OPP.

The Ontario Provincial Police is on patrol to ensure that you and your family remain safe all year round and not just on holiday weekend. It is the goal of the OPP to help prevent  fatalities from occurring on our highways. We hope this is your goal as well and working together we can make this goal come true.

                                    Spring Bear Safety

Spring has sprung and with it comes the joys of springtime events. One of these springtime events that occur at this time of the year is a bear looking for food after a long winter. In the Temiskaming area we have had several bears being spotted and certain precautions need to be taken.

The best way to reduce bear problems is prevention. If you are having bears coming around your property you need to look at what is attracting them to your home or business and what could you do to discourage them.

In order to reduce the likelihood of being visited by bears there are many things you can do to “bear proof’ your property.

Store garbage in steel containers, or in airtight containers inside a storage area that is not accessible to bears.

Put garbage out on the morning of collection, not the night before.

Wash garbage containers and dumpsters frequently and use disinfectant to deduce odors.

Wait until fall to fill birdfeeders.

Do not leave pet food outdoors.

Clean outdoor grills after every use.

Rinse containers before disposal and recycling.

Do not feed wild animals.

Remove a hummingbird feeder if there are bears in the area.

When bears come around your property it may start off as being a nuisance and if this is the case you need to call the Ministry of Natural Resources at the bear wise program number 1-866-514-2327.

The bear can pose a threat very quickly and when this occurs you need to contact your local police for immediate assistance, for the Ontario Provincial Police cal 1-888-310-1122.

Remember that the area that we live in is the bear’s home as well; they need space, shelter and food. Please give them the respect they deserve and give them a chance by bear proofing your property.
