LABOUR DAY LONG
WEEKEND DRIVING
DISTRACTED DRIVING REMAINS SERIOUS HIGHWAY CHALLENGE
(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) – The Sault Ste. Marie OPP is
reminding motorists and boaters who will be on OPP patrolled roadways and
waterways this Labour Day long weekend that officers will out in full force
targeting aggressive drivers and marine operators who are not wearing their
seatbelts, who fail to have proper marine safety equipment, particularly life
vests/personal floatation devices (PFD’s) and people who continue to
drink and drive either a motor vehicle or marine vessel.
“A moment’s inattention can result in injury
and death,” states Inspector Mark Andrews – Traffic and Marine
Commander, North East Region.
“Drivers are drifting across the centre line for whatever
reason, possibly distraction or fatigue and slamming into oncoming
traffic. Drivers seem to let down
their guard in sunny weather and are less alert to what’s going on
around them.”
“Certainly most of the attention has been on texting
and driving, but there are a host of other distractions including cell phone
calls (both handheld and hands-free) as well as more traditional ones such as
eating, adjusting the radio, using the CD player or talking to
passengers” says Staff Sergeant Wes Moore – Sault Ste. Marie OPP
Detachment. “Drivers need to be reminded to manage these distractions
safely.”
For most children in Ontario,
the new school year will begin next Tuesday.
Many families will be out enjoying their last weekend of summer before
returning home from cottages and other vacation spots. The OPP will be out to help ensure traffic
and marine safety for everyone over this last long weekend of the
season. We are asking all citizens to
join our efforts by acting responsibly while out enjoying our roads and
waterways this weekend. Together we
can ensure a safe and enjoyable Labour Day holiday weekend.
