Sault Ste. Marie
Detachment RELEASE: Friday,
09 May, 2008
12:35 P.M.
MINISTRY OF TRANSPORTATION AND ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE LAUNCH
5TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE “STASH YOUR
TRASH PROGRAM” ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGN
Sault Ste. Marie,
Ont.,
The Ministry of Transportation in
co-operation with the Ontario Provincial Police is once again providing sites for disposal of
in-vehicle litter. The program will
commence Friday May 16, 2008 and run until the Thanksgiving weekend.
The Stash Your Trash program is located
between Wawa and Sault Ste Marie. There are 13 signed sites with special
containers for disposal of your in-vehicle litter.
The sites are not meant for the disposal
of household waste. Misuse of the
sites in the past has resulted in strewn trash from bags ripped open by
animals and in extreme cases human encounters with bears. Sites have been closed in the past due to
misuse and are subject to permanent closure where misuse is excessive.
This year two businesses in the program
area have agreed to assist with the program.
The Canadian Carver and Voyageur Lodge and Cookhouse are helping
sponsor the production of the vehicle litter bag. Individual bags will be available while
quantities last from the two businesses, the Wawa
Tourist Information centre, the gate houses at Lake Superior and Pancake
Provincial Parks, the Sault Ste Marie Tourist Information centre and the
local MTO office. O.P.P. officers will
also be handing out bags at various events.
Some tips for items that are not
appropriate for the sites include:
Building materials
Tires
Furniture
Propane tanks
Household garbage
Items that are meant for the program
include:
Fast food
containers
Coffee cups
Snack containers
The Ministry of Transportation and the
O.P.P. will work together to identify offenders who are caught littering on
the Highway. Littering under the
Highway Traffic Act of Ontario carries a fine of $110.00.
Everyone can help by calling the OPP if
you see road users littering. The toll
free number to call the OPP is 1-888-310-1122. You can also contact the OPP free of charge
on a cell phone by pressing *OPP (*667).
The M.T.O and the O.P.P encourage all
road users to take ownership and responsibility of the environment and your
trash.
Road users between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa will again have highly visible and easily accessible
disposal sites beside the highway.
LET’S ALL BE PART OF THE SOLUTION
– NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM
STASH YOUR TRASH!

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE SPRING SEATBELT CAMPAIGN COMES TO AN END
Sault Ste. Marie,
Ont.,
The Sault Ste. Marie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police checked more than 3000
vehicles during the annual spring seatbelt initiative which ended this past
Sunday night.
Locally, 23 charges were laid against
drivers, and 5 charges were laid against passengers for not buckling up.
These numbers are up from the same time
in 2007 where 11 drivers were charged and 2 charges were laid against
passengers for not buckling up.
Last year, 117 people were killed on
roads patrolled by the OPP as a result of not being buckled up.
There are still drivers out there who
don’t get it. The few seconds it
takes to buckle up could be the difference between living and dying if you
are involved in a collision.
