News Release (RENFREW, ON) – The Renfrew Detachment of the “Granny Fraud” hits Renfrew A fraudulent scheme, commonly referred to as “Granny
Fraud” has claimed a victim in Renfrew.
The victim is contacted by someone claiming to be one of their
grandchildren. They state they are in
trouble, either involved in a car crash, or in jail and need bail money. The victim is then instructed to wire money
to an alleged lawyer or police officer, and is always asked not to tell
anyone. Anyone contacted with a request of this nature should
always verify the information or whereabouts of the “grandchild”
with a family member or police. People
are often embarrassed by being duped, and don’t report the fraud to
anyone. The Renfrew OPP are
encouraging anyone who has been targeted to contact them, as these criminals
are professionals and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. If you have any information or concerns
contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 Theft A large fish shaped mailbox was stolen from a residence on
Constable Babin is also investigating 4 damaged mailboxes
on A red car was stolen from a home in Calabogie overnight on
Saturday Aug 28. The 1998 Sometime during the past two weeks a generator was stolen
from a cottage on A wallet was stolen from an unlocked vehicle on A white 1992 Mercury grand marquis 4 door, Ont licence 467
XNT was stolen from Rath’s Farm Equipment on Russett Dr in
McNab/Braeside Township. The vehicle,
which has the name of the business on both front doors, was reported stolen
on August 26. Provincial Constable
Kevin Rebertz is investigating. A case of beer was stolen from The Beer Store in Renfrew
Sunday, August 29. The theft was
captured on video and the investigation is continuing. Suspended Driver On Friday August 27 Provincial Constable Amanda Carruthers
observed a male driving on Fraud Provincial Constable Lisa Nicholas is investigating a
fraud after a victim reported a cheque was stolen from them and cashed. There is a suspect in the case, and the
investigation is continuing. One male is facing charges after using fraudulent means to
obtain goods at Wal-Mart in Renfrew.
Provincial Constable Joey Limlaw investigated the incident which
occurred on August 26 and charged Shawn WASYLIW 19 of Whitewater Region with
one count of Fraud under $5,000. He
was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on October 13. Mischief A sign was damaged by vandals who used spray paint. The sign is located at the intersection of A home on A glass entrance door at an apartment building on Impaired Driver On Wednesday, August 25 at approx 12:25am Sgt Steve Linton
was conducting RIDE spot checks in Renfrew on Assault One male is facing charges after attempting to assault an
officer with several weapons. On
Friday August 27 at approx 8:25am police responded to a call for service at a
residence on Barr Line, Admaston/Bromley Township. Upon arrival a male approached an officer
carrying two weapons. After speaking
to the male for several minutes the male dropped the weapons and was
arrested. Mario AUDET 45 of
Admaston/Bromley was arrested and charged with assault peace officer with a
weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was held for a bail hearing on August
27, and was remanded into custody. Liquor Licence Offences On August 29 at approx 1:50am officers dealt with an
intoxicated female sitting on the curb of Domestic Disputes Renfrew OPP officers responded to one domestic dispute
during the past week. One female was
charged with being intoxicated in a public place. No criminal offences occurred. If you have information on the above crimes you are asked
