O.P.P. WEEKLY REVIEW

(Kemptville, Ontario) – Between April 28th and May 2nd, 2008, the Kemptville office of North Grenville Ontario Provincial Police investigated 58 general occurrences: 15 Kemptville, 31 Municipality of North Grenville, 7 Municipality of Merrickville – Wolford and 5 on Highway 416.

This year the Ontario Provincial Police’s involvement in the Spring Seat Belt Campaign was a great success. Approximately 1.2 million vehicles were stopped and over 15,000 seat belt charges were laid. Both of these numbers are up from last year.

The most important figure is the reduction in deaths to date directly attributed to not wearing a seat belt. The fatalities in this area have decreased by 29 per cent. One very clear example of the importance of wearing a seat belt is of a female who was stopped and charged with not wearing a seat belt and a short time later was involved in a collision. She was spared from serious injury because she was belted and later called the officer who charged her and thanked him.

The members of North Grenville Detachment Ontario Provincial Police and the North Grenville Police Services Board in celebration of Police Week would like to invite the Community to an Open House on Saturday, May 10th, 2008 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. There will be a Charity B.B.Q. in support of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

OPP Charge Commercial Vehicle and Aggressive Drivers

OPP detachments in Eastern Region, which include SDG, Grenville and Leeds County with the OPP Highway Safety Division (HSD) are working together in the fight to reduce aggressive driving and collisions on Highway 401 between Lancaster and Gananoque.

On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, these officers were joined by the MTO as they targeted the scales and Gananoque area along the 401.

As a result of the day long initiative, officers laid 54 charges which included:

4 - seatbelt

46 - speeding

1 – drive - no licence (vehicle was towed)

1 – defective brakes

2 – other offences

One driver was issued a 12 hour suspension for registering a warn on the road side screening device.

8 - commercial vehicles were subject to full mechanical inspections, in which 6 were placed out of service for various mechanical problems from loose u-bolts and bald tires to improperly adjusted brakes.

Due to the increase in major incidents on our highways, drivers can expect to see OPP officers joining forces regularly…so drive safe, be attentive and slow down!

Drivers who are traveling over the posted speed limits are a danger to themselves and other motorists. As their speeds increase, so too does their stopping distance, which further increases the likelihood of them being involved in a major incident.

Safe driving begins with you.  Everyone’s life depends on it!

***** Cyclists *****

Riding in Traffic

The Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) defines the bicycle as a vehicle that belongs on the road.  Riding on the road means riding with other traffic.  This is only safe when all traffic uses the same rules of the road.

When everyone follows the same rules, actions become more predictable.  Drivers can anticipate your moves and plan accordingly.  Likewise, you too can anticipate and deal safely with the actions of others.

Where do you ride?

Because bicycles usually travel at a lower speed, there are two rules of the road to which cyclists must pay special attention:

slower traffic stays right

slower traffic must give way to faster traffic when safe and practical

Helmets

An approved bicycle helmet can greatly reduce the risk of permanent injury or death in the event of a fall or collision.  A helmet works by absorbing the forces of a crash, so if the helmet has been in a collision, it should be replaced even if there is no visible damage.

 HTA 104 – Helmets

Every cyclist under the age of eighteen must wear an approved bicycle helmet.  Parents or guardians shall not knowingly permit cyclists under sixteen to ride without a helmet.
