OPP ISSUE 3 DAY SUSPENSION
(IROQUOIS FALLS)
– The Iroquois Falls OPP has issued a 3 day suspension stemming from a
routine traffic stop of a Dodge Dakota pickup truck on Ambridge Drive in
Iroquois Falls on August 30th, 2010.
The driver was required to provide breath samples based on
the observations made by the investigating OPP officer.
The results of these breath tests warranted the issuance
of a 3 day suspension to the driver, a 64 yr old Iroquois
Falls man.
The 3 day suspension replaces the 12 hour suspension in Ontario.
South Porcupine OPP Community Services Officer, Const Marc
Depatie reminds local motorists that the consumption of alcohol prior to
driving places all motorists at risk of being involved in motor vehicle
collisions that result all too often in severe injury or death.

on Hwy 101 in Reeves

The OPP officer had occasion to observe a 2009 Ford F-150
pickup truck allegedly travelling at a speed of 136 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone.
The 57 yr old driver of the truck from York,
Ontario was stopped after the alleged
offence took place.

The South Porcupine OPP reminds motorists that the
obligations to be safe and responsible while behind the wheel rests squarely
on the shoulders of the individual driver.

LOCAL OPP WILL BE ON PATROL: LABOR DAY WEEKEND
(SOUTH PORCUPINE) – The South Porcupine OPP and its
satellite detachments will be maintaining a strong presence on area highways,
waterways and in the outlying areas as well this Labor Day holiday weekend.
This is the last long weekend of the summer and an
increase in traffic volumes is expected.
Many motorists will be conveying post secondary students and their
belongings on area highways. Adherence
to basic rules of the road and exercising patience behind the wheel will pay
huge dividends in terms of personal safety.
South Porcupine OPP Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant
Rick Witty adds “Motorists should focus on reaching their destination
is a safe manner, not in a speedy or careless one. OPP officers will be monitoring all area
highways for aggressive driving behaviours.
When observed, the offending motorist can expect a firm but fair
response at the roadside.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Sgt Roy Onlock of the
OPP’s Highway Safety Division by saying “Speeding, unsafe passing
and following too closely are all forms of aggressive driving that all too
often lead to collisions. These
collisions are highly avoidable when drivers exercise patience and good
judgement while behind the wheel.”
In addition, RIDE spot checks will be used by the OPP at
random times and at various locations in an effort to locate and remove
impaired drivers from our highways.
Seat belt usage will also be a focal area for OPP officers
on patrol.
Inspector Mark Andrews adds “A moment’s
inattention can result in serious injury or death. Drivers are drifting across the centre
line for whatever reason, possibly distraction or fatigue and slamming into
oncoming traffic. Drivers seem to let
down their guard in sunny weather and are less alert to what is going on
around them”
Enhanced highway safety can be achieved through a working
partnership between the motoring public and law enforcement personnel. The public can rest assured that the OPP
will be doing the utmost to influence driving behaviours and stop unsafe
drivers whose demeanour behind the wheel is a threat to public safety.

OPP URGES RENEWED SCHOOL BUS AWARENESS
(SOUTH PORCUPINE) – The South Porcupine OPP would like
for local drivers to re-acquaint themselves with the need to be extra
vigilant on area roadways as school buses will be running again.
Motorists are reminded that traffic is required to come to
a complete stop from either direction when approaching a stopped school bus
with its red lights flashing and its stop bar extended.
South Porcupine OPP Detachment Commander Rick Witty adds
“The safety of school age children is a responsibility we all share as
motorists. Their well being is in the
hands of those drivers who will now be sharing the roadways with school
buses. Patience and good judgement are
essential elements in the driving equation that leads to tragedy free trips
to and from school for our community’s children. Any motorist observed failing to come to a
complete stop as required can fully expect a prompt and firm response from
local OPP officers”
