School Buses
are Returning ( OPP officers will be out ensuring that motorists are
reminded of the rules of the road in regards to school buses, and
pedestrians. Section 175(11) of
the Highway Traffic Act states, “Every driver or street car
operator, when meeting on a highway, other than a highway with a median
strip, a stopped school bus that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing,
shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves
or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing.” R.S.O. 1990. The fine for failing to stop for a school bus with lights
flashing is $400.00
accompanied by a victim fine surcharge. Many of our children walk to school and motorists should
beware of the increased pedestrian traffic around our local schools, as
children make their way for their first exciting day. Reduced speeds in some school zones will
again be in affect, so beware, we’ll be watching. Please also be aware that when you are
charged with certain offences, including speeding, the fines are increased and
in some cases doubled, in Community Safety Zones. A community safety zone is any areas with
signs near schools, daycares or any other designated area. Let’s make
it a safe school year! - 30 - Contact: Beth Ethier Tel # 613 735-0188 FROM/DE: Highway

OPP STEPPING UP
ENFORCEMENT for UPCOMING LABOUR DAY Weekend ( To this effect, OPP officers will be out in full force
patrolling “We are asking everyone to join our efforts by
acting responsibly while out enjoying the roads and waterways this upcoming holiday
long-weekend” said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis. “The OPP will continue to demonstrate
our commitment to safe communities by being out in full force and targeting
those who put others safety at risk”. Numerous lives have been lost on our roadways and
waterways this summer. So far this
year, 205 people have died in traffic related fatalities in Marine fatalities are down in 2010 to 17 to date as
compared to “The increase in the number of fatalities from last
year causes the OPP great concern” said Deputy Commissioner Larry
Beechey, Provincial Commander responsible for OPP Traffic Safety
Programs. “This is not
acceptable and our stepped up patrols across the province will be addressing
this issue by targeting the aggressive driving and boating behaviours that
put the lives and safety of innocent people at risk.” The OPP is calling on all motorists and boaters to keep
safety as a priority this long weekend.
Slow down and be respectful of others. Leave some extra time to get to your destination
and keep extra space between you and other vehicles or vessels. Let’s work together to make this final
weekend of summer a safe one. - 30 - Contacts by OPP Region: Highway Safety Division: Sergeant

which a vehicle was entered on Fraud On the 26th of August a complainant reported
that she was attempting to sell a product on line when she was contacted by a
suspect who offered to purchase it.
She was sent 3 money orders in excess of the amount for the
purchase. The money orders were
fraudulent. “Overpayment scams are the type of
fraud where the person receiving the cheque is actually owed money for goods
sold. The seller receives a counterfeit cashier's cheque personal cheque
or corporate cheque from the “purchaser” in an amount in excess
of the amount owed; is asked to deposit the cheque and wire the excess funds
immediately back to the sender/purchaser or the purchaser's agent or shipper;
and, the deposited cashier's cheque is subsequently returned as counterfeit
and charged back to the seller's account. Anyone selling goods should
be suspicious of any cheque, especially if it is for more than the agreed
selling price. Consider an alternative method of payment, such as an escrow
service or online payment service. Talk to your bank about the safest
way to receive funds from overseas. To protect yourself against this sort of
scam, never agree
to a deal in which the payer wishes to issue an amount for more than the
agreed price and expects you to reimburse the balance. The scammers use a
variety of excuses to explain the overpayment, but any such excuse should be
treated with the utmost suspicion. In order
to avoid overpayment scams, remember the following general words of advice: Know whom
you are dealing with – independently confirm your buyer's name, street
address, and telephone number; Never
accept a cheque for more than your selling price; Never
agree to wire back funds to a buyer – a legitimate buyer will not pressure
you to do so, and you have limited recourse if there is a problem with a wire
transfer; Resist
pressure to “act now.” If the buyer's offer is good now, it
should be good when the cheque clears; if you accept payment by cheque, ask
for a cheque drawn on a local bank or a bank with a local branch. You can
visit that bank branch to determine if the cheque is legitimate; If the buyer
wants to use a service you have not heard of, be sure to check it out to be
sure it is reliable – check its Web site, call its customer service
hotline, and read its terms of agreement and privacy policy. If you do not
feel comfortable with the service, do not use it. “ (Phonebusters.com) Mischief P/C Mike P/C McDonald was the investigating officer in a report of damage
