Suspicious Phone Calls

During the previous week the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment has received complaints in which the public has received phone calls from unknown persons claiming to represent Bell Canada.  They are asking for the persons SIN number and they will then receive a free cell phone.

A complaint was received in the Town of Petawawa, where a caller phoned claiming to represent Bell and was offering a free Home Security Service.  When the caller was advised that the person already had a security system the caller hung up.  The phone number was a blocked number.

The public is reminded not to give out personal information over the phone to an unknown caller especially banking information and personal number such as your SIN number.  The public is also reminded to be cautious about giving out any information about your property without first knowing who is calling, and verifying that they are legitimate.

For more information on frauds and scams please visit the website www.phonebusters.com.If you have doubts about a caller, your best defence is to simply hang up. It's not rude – it's smart.

If you are not familiar with the caller on the other end of the telephone or have any doubts, hang up.  These are professionals and you are not the first person they have contacted.  No matter how many questions you ask they will have answers for.  Call the company they are alleging to be and confirm identities or promotions.  Write down their name and service number – confirm these with the company.  It is your money – protect it!

While it appears that the message is slowly getting across to drivers, there are still people who think that they are sober enough to drive when they are not.  The only true safe level of alcohol consumption for drivers is none at all.  Drinking and driving is never a good mix.  Members of the local detachment of the OPP will continue to conduct RIDE programs through out the Upper Ottawa Valley area.

BICYCLE SAFETY

(Petawawa, Ontario) – With the nice weather upon us, many adults and youth will be getting their bicycles out for another season.  The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the OPP would like to remind cyclists of the need to follow all laws and to think of safety while cycling.

Some safety tips to consider are:

Ride in a straight line on the right hand side of the road, in the same direction as traffic.  You must travel as far to the right as practicable, except when preparing for a left turn or passing.

Stop at the edge of the road; stop at red lights and stop signs.  Look to see if the road is clear.  Look all ways.

Always look over your shoulder behind you before you turn or move out on the road

Signal – let drivers know what you are going to do next

Look ahead down the road to see if there might be danger ahead

Cyclists under 18 must wear an approved bicycle helmet.  Helmets are strongly recommended for cyclists over 18

Road safety depends on both cyclists and motorists.

Ice Safety

The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the OPP would like to urge the public to be extremely cautious in and around frozen bodies of water.  With the recent warm temperatures ice thickness is unpredictable.  Ice could be several inches one day and only a couple the next. Parents are asked to caution their children about the dangers of ice conditions.
