911 is for Emergencies · An
“emergency” constitutes any situation that requires immediate assistance
when the safety of people or property is at risk, e.g. a crime in progress, a
motor vehicle collision, a fire or medical emergency. · Ask
yourself…”Do I need immediate assistance to protect life or
property?”. If the answer is YES, then call 911. · The OPP has specific
equipment to accommodate hearing or speech-impaired callers using a TDD/TTY. · The OPP has access to
Foreign Line-language Service for non-English speaking 911 callers. · If you call 911 in
error, NEVER HANG UP. Tell the call taker what happened. · When calling 911,
remain calm if possible. The trained call taker will assist you through
your emergency. Do exactly as the 911 call taker tells you.
Listen carefully to the call taker and remain on the line if it is safe to do
so. · 911 is not intended to
be used as a number that is convenient for those who will not take the time
to look up the non-emergent number for the OPP, fire or ambulance service. · Approximately 90 percent
of 911 calls received are not emergent in · OPP calls for service
numbers: 1-888-310-1122, 1-888-310-1133 (TDD). Local detachment numbers
during regular business hours are listed in the telephone
directory. · The *677 is a number
provided through cellular phone service providers, and will also connect you
to the OPP. · With winter
approaching, please remember not to call the OPP for road
conditions/closures. MTO should be contacted at 1-800-268-4686 or www.mto.gov.on.ca <http://www.mto.gov.on.ca>
for this information. · When traveling, plan
ahead by checking the MTO website or calling the MTO number for up-to-date
road and weather conditions for the area in which you will be traveling. · What occurs when you
call 911 or the OPP with non-emergent calls? o Someone with an actual
emergency or calls that require police service may be delayed because all
lines or calltakers are otherwise engaged. o The OPP staffs all
facilities using the latest and best technologies available, including call
volume trends/statistics and workload analysis. Technology used ensures
that 911 calls receive priority over other calls. o All this information
is then used to schedule personnel to meet the projected demand. The scheduling of personnel does not
factor in the improper use of 911. |
