County OPP DATE: February 2, 2010
(Chatsworth, ON.) Police services everywhere investigate thefts from
motor vehicles routinely. The victims and community at large pay the costs while
the culprits are seldom caught. Hundreds of these crimes are investigated
annually in Grey-Bruce.
Whether a neighborhood kid gone
astray, drug addict needing cash, or career criminal on the move they all
have the desire and ability to steal. What they need to complete the crime is
OPPORTUNITY. Does our rural setting and relaxed lifestyle contribute
to making us an easy mark?
An unlocked vehicle or a vehicle
with an open window is an open invitation for these nickel and dime crimes
that are seldom witnessed. Think “LOCK IT or LOSE IT” and you
will help yourself and your community. Follow this simple checklist:
Lock the doors and roll up the
windows.
Remove valuables and packages or
at least hide them from view.
Remove all personal accessories such
as purses or wallets.
Park in well lit areas or places
of high traffic/visibility.
Never leave keys in your vehicle
or your unattended vehicle running.
If you have a garage, lock it
and lock the vehicle inside.

IF YOU DON’T KNOW, DON’T GO
SNOWMOBILE AND ICE SAFETY TIPS
(Chatsworth, ON.) With snowmobile season in full swing Grey County
OPP has some tips to help those
involved in the sport stay safe.
Safe operation of a motorized snow vehicle requires a
level of physical strength, skill and maturity. The law permits children age
12 to 16 years to acquire a snowmobile licence but parents are urged to make
sure they are capable. Likewise
passengers require a certain level of physical stamina and maturity as they
may need to hold on for extended periods as the machine covers a variety of
terrain at high rates of speed. For
that reason children under 6 years old should not ride as passengers on
snowmobiles.
A large number of snowmobile crashes, including the vast
majority of fatalities, occur during hours of darkness. Forward visibility is reduced by darkness
and it is much more difficult to spot and identify potential hazards. Overdriving your headlights is a serious
problem, so when traveling after dark slow down!
It’s also easy to become disoriented at night so
ride in familiar areas or with a group that know the trails. Always wear warm outer clothing that has
reflective trim on the sleeves, back and helmet. It is always smart to check to make sure
your lights are all operating properly before you head out.
Traveling over ice, frozen lakes, rivers or ponds can be especially
dangerous. A thickness of 5 inches (12 centimeters) of good ice is
recommended to safely support a snowmobile and operator. Never travel on ice
that hasn’t been checked and familiarize yourself with procedures for
self rescue should you be unfortunate enough to break through.
Always remember to tell someone your travel plans before
you head out. And keep to your plan so
people don’t spend time out looking for you when you’re already
somewhere safe. Carrying a charged
cell phone is also a good idea.
Grey County OPP hopes that all snowmobile enthusiasts follow these
simple guidelines and enjoy a safe and pleasurable snowmobiling season.

Beer Store Smash and Grab
Police on Scene within Minutes
LP10027632
(Chatsworth, ON.)
– Grey County
OPP is investigating an early morning smash and grab at the Beer Store in Grey
Highlands.
At about 1:30
this morning (February 2, 2010)
a glass break alarm was sounded at the Beer Store situated on Argyle
St. N. in Markdale. Nearby officers responded
within 2 minutes but the culprit had already fled and the object apparently
used to smash the window was found nearby.
Police are reviewing video footage. A suspect captured on
tape is a clean shaven white male with dark hair who appears to be in his mid
twenties. He was wearing blue jeans, a gray hoody and a ball cap. It appears
that the goods obtained amounted to a case of beer that was stacked near the
storefront.
“Someone has committed a serious offence just to
obtain a case of beer. The investigation is in the early stages but given the
video evidence it is likely that the suspect will eventually be apprehended.
Contacting our office and dealing with the consequences of his actions is a
good first option for him.
Anyone with information that might assist in this
investigation is asked to contact Grey County
OPP or Crime Stoppers. Constable
Brad Olsen is the investigating officer.
