Warning - Tax Refund Scam

Con Artists are “Phishing” Again

 

(Chatsworth, ON.)Grey County O.P.P. wants to warn area residents about a repeat scam that has surfaced in our area again this spring.  

 

The timing coincides with the arrival of the 2009 tax packages in the mail. An email being circulated shows up in the intended victim’s email mailbox as if it originated from the government of Canada, more specifically the Canada Revenue Agency. It is indicated to the person in receipt of this email that they are entitled to a tax refund and specifies the amount. 

 

For a sample of an email received by an area resident see “Appendix A”.

 

If the recipient follows the link on the email they would be required to provide information to allow the refund to be processed. The information requested includes, but may not be limited to:

The intent of this scam is to obtain personal information that can be used to steal from or defraud the victim. It is a commonly used tactic known as “phishing”. Do not respond and do not provide such information.

The Canada Revenue Agency is aware of the scams and has posted sample emails on their website. They have also taken steps to disable the link within some of the emails circulated. Persons receiving such emails can forward them to Phonebusters website at www.phonebusters.com.  They are well aware of it.

Snowmobile Stolen from Restaurant Lot

Police Looking for Witnesses

(Grey County, ON.) – Grey County OPP is investigating the theft of a motorized snow vehicle that occurred while the owner was having dinner at an area diner.

 

On Thursday, March 4, 2010 the owner of the machine parked on the lot of “Mylar and Loretta’s” restaurant in Singhampton (southeast Grey County on Grey Road 124). While in the restaurant the snow machine was stolen sometime between 8 pm and 8:30 pm. At this point in the investigation no witnesses have been identified.

 

It should be noted that the keys were not left in the snow machine. It

 

 

Stolen: 2007 Ski-Doo MXZ "blizzard" 800 cc, black with white,  Registration 970472  Has a bag attached on rear with maps, first-aid kit.  Also, machine has several Canadian flag stickers on it.  Machine has a studded track.

 

Full tank of gas, no documents with machine.  No keys were left with the machine.

A Meaford youth has been released pending a scheduled first appearance at the Youth Justice Court – Owen Sound on April 20, 2010. He faces the Criminal Code charges of Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon.

Weapons Brought to School

Student Faces Charges

(Grey County, ON.) – Grey County OPP was called to attend a Meaford high school after staff discovered weapons in a student’s locker yesterday (March 2, 2010)

 

Just after 11:30 am an officers attended Georgian Bay Secondary School (G.B.S.S.) in Meaford regarding a report of a handgun in a locker. The investigation revealed that the gun in question was actually a pellet pistol. In addition to the pellet pistol a knife that could be opened with centrifugal force (commonly known as a flick knife) was seized. The seized items were associated to a 15 year-old male student who attends G.B.S.S.

 

A Meaford youth has been released pending a scheduled first appearance at the Youth Justice Court – Owen Sound on April 20, 2010. He faces the Criminal Code charges of Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon.

Police Execute Search Warrant

 

 

(Grey County, ON.) – On February 25th 2010 members of the Ontario Provincial Police Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau – Drug Enforcement Unit, Emergency Response Team, and the Grey County Detachment executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Search Warrant on the property at 493809 Side Road #49, in Grey Highlands, Grey County.

 

Police located an illegal cannabis marihuana grow operation, and seized cannabis marihuana plants with an estimated potential street value of approximately $615 000.00. 

 

Police also seized dried cannabis marihuana with an estimated potential street value of $1100.00, and two motorized snow vehicles that were stolen from Simcoe County.

 

Charged were Charles WHYTE (45), of Georgetown and Gordon WHYTE (42) of Caledon, with Production of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, Theft of Electricity and 2 count of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. Both are scheduled to appear at the Owen Sound Ontario Court of Justice on the 25th of March 2010.
