Labour Day Weekend

(North Bay, ON) – Labour Day Weekend which starts on Friday, September 3rd and ends on Monday, September 6th, 2010 will see people travelling to their cottages or their favourite vacationing spot as this is our last long weekend of the summer. North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), which includes North Bay, Mattawa and Powassan Detachments, anticipates an increase in traffic.

Being prepared and alert at all times is key to a safe arrival wherever your destination maybe” states Detachment Commander – Staff Sergeant Irving Sloss.    Motorists are urged to practice safe driving by reducing their speed, remaining calm in stressful situations, using their signals, always checking their blind spots, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and being courteous to other drivers. Speeding, tailgating, aggressive driving such as weaving in and out of traffic and not yielding the right-of-way can lead to collisions.

"A moment’s inattention can result in injury and death," states Inspector Mark Andrews - Traffic and Marine Commander, North East Region. "Drivers are drifting across the centre line for whatever reason, possibly distraction or fatigue and slamming into oncoming traffic.    Drivers seem to let down their guard in sunny weather and are less alert to what's going on around them."

As of August 25, 2010, 43 people have died in the North East Region on OPP patrolled roadways, two being in the North Bay Detachment area.

The OPP remains relentless in saving lives and reducing injuries on Ontario highways, trails and waterways.  This weekend won’t be any different and traffic safety will be our focus with particular attention to drinking and driving, excessive speed, aggressive driving and non-use of seatbelt.

Marine patrols are scheduled on all main bodies of water within our detachment area.  Play your part by making safety your first responsibility when boating.  About 90% of people who drown in recreational boating incidents are NOT wearing a lifejacket/personal floatation device.  So find one that suits your needs and wear it!  Drinking and operating your vessel is against the law.  Lastly, ensure you have the prescribed equipment for the vessel size and configuration.  You may obtain more information from your local OPP Detachment.  You can also contact The Boating Safety Info Line at 1-800-267-6687 or on the web at:  www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca.

Let’s Remember Adam – Stop for the School Bus

(North Bay, ON) – “It’s time to think about school bus safety” is the message from the staff of the Ontario Provincial Police, the Ministry of Transportation, the North Eastern Ontario Trauma Related Education Committee  and their invaluable community partners in preventing school bus related injuries and fatalities.

School starts in less than two weeks and those yellow school buses will be on the road delivering our future leaders to and from school each day.

On 11 February 2000, Adam Ranger, who was 5 years old, was killed while exiting a school bus. Since that time the Ranger family along with numerous civic minded businesses and organizations have pressed for changes to school bus safety and an awareness of the dangers of not stopping for a school bus.

Since the launch of the “Let’s Remember Adam – Stop for the School Bus” Campaign in August 2005, over 30 billboards have been erected through out Northern Ontario. Now comes the official launch of the “Lets Remember Adam” website.

The website can be accessed at www.letsrememberadam.org

Here you will find links to legislation and to provincial statistics outlining the charges that have been issued in various parts of the province for motorists who have failed to stop for a school bus.

In Ontario, more than 800,000 children travel on school buses to and from school each day.  Every young passenger’s life is worth protecting.

Ontario legislation requires drivers to stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing.  Whether you are travelling on a city street, a highway or country road, and regardless of the speed limit and the number of lanes, motorists travelling in both directions must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing.  Violators can face fines of up to $2,000 and six demerit points.  As of September 2005, the legislation states that the registered owner of vehicles can be charged.  This change in legislation makes it easier for bus drivers to accurately report to police vehicles that do not follow the passing legislation.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY

(North Bay, ON) – “It’s time to think about school bus safety” is the message from the officers of North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment.  In Ontario, more than 800,000 children travel on school buses.  Every young passenger’s life is worth protecting.

Ontario law requires drivers to stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing.  Whether you are travelling on a city street, a highway or country road, and regardless of the speed limit and the number of lanes, motorists travelling in both directions must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing.  (The only exception:  on highways separated by a median, traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop).  Do not start moving until the red lights have stopped flashing and the bus begins to move.  Violators can face fines of up to $2,000 and six demerit points.  As of September 2005, the legislation states that the registered owner of vehicles can be charged.  This change in legislation makes it easier for bus drivers to accurately report to police vehicles that do not follow the passing legislation.

A few safety tips for parents – Your child’s school bus safety can be improved by following a few simple steps. We urge parents to talk to their children about school bus rules.  Remind them to wait for the school bus in a safe place, away from traffic and the street.  Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter.  When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus, out of the danger zone.  Be aware of the traffic around you.  Even though drivers are required to follow certain rules not all of them do.  “Be alert and protect yourself!”
