Labour Day Weekend

Stay Focused on Roadways, Waterways and Trails

(Manitoulin, ON.) – A great summer season is coming to a close.  Whether you plan on boating, taking an ATV ride, motorcycle ride, or taking trip in a motor vehicle this weekend, please stay focused and drive with care.

“The Ontario Provincial Police will be out patrolling, highways, waterway and trails to ensure the safety of Ontarians and visitors” states Staff Sergeant Bruce McCullagh.  “My concern is distracted drivers.  Stay focused on the road, wear your seatbelt, don’t drink and drive, pull over if you are tired, and don’t talk on the phone or text while driving.  Wear your lifejacket while boating.  Wear a helmet while operating an ATV.”

"A moment of inattention can result in injury and death," states Inspector Mark Andrews - Traffic and Marine Commander, North East Region. "Drivers are drifting across the centre line for whatever reason, possibly distraction or fatigue and slamming into oncoming traffic.    Drivers seem to let down their guard in sunny weather and are less alert to what's going on around them."

So far this year, more than 40 people have been killed on the Region’s highways, waterways, and trails.  All available resources and personnel will be deployed for the Labour Day Weekend as the OPP will continue to crack down on aggressive drivers, those who drink and drive, and those fail to buckle up or fail to use safety equipment.

Keep our emergency services and police officers safe, move over for stopped emergency vehicles on the side of the road with emergency lights activated – it’s the law.
