Working Together for Safe Roads, Trails and Waterways

Student safety is first lesson as school resumes

Hastings & Prince Edward Counties/August 31, 2010 – Children across the region head back to class next week.

The Quinte Region Traffic Coalition is urging parents and drivers to help ensure kids can walk safely to and from school on neighbourhood streets.

Pedestrian incidents continue to be a leading cause of death for children under age 14 in Canada.  Most incidents happen between 3 to 6 p.m., when drivers are coming home from work, and children may be walking home from school.

“Fortunately, many of these incidents can be prevented,” says Sgt Curt McLean of the Central Hastings OPP. “That’s accomplished by drivers slowing down and by parents taking every opportunity to teach their children about pedestrian safety.”

The QRTC would like to remind parents of the following pedestrian safety tips from Safe Kids Canada:

Teach your child to stop at the curb, look left, right and left again, and to listen for oncoming traffic.

Children under the age of nine lack the developmental skills to cross the street on their own and should be accompanied by an adult or responsible older child.

In order to cross a street independently and safely, children need three important skills that they typically acquire between nine and 11 years of age:  Children should be able to decide on and use a safe crossing route; realistically assess a vehicle’s speed, and judge safe gaps in traffic.  Children that have not yet reached this stage must be supervised.

Be a role model by walking with your children to school and demonstrating safe pedestrian practices.

Distractions are dangerous – remind your children to put away their cell phones and take off ear buds before crossing the street.

Drivers need to slow down:  the higher the speed, the higher the risk of injury to a child pedestrian.

The goal of the Quinte Region Traffic Coalition is to reduce injuries on roads, trails and waterways in the region. It is a partnership of the Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit, Belleville Police Service, Stirling-Rawdon Police Service and the OPP Detachments serving Central Hastings, Quinte West, Prince Edward County and Bancroft.

OPP STEPPING UP ENFORCEMENT for UPCOMING LABOUR DAY Weekend

(ORILLIA, ON) – As the hot days of summer draw to a close and people prepare to celebrate the final long weekend of the season, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists and boaters traveling on OPP patrolled roadways, waterways and trails during the Labour Day weekend that they should not be taking any time off from thinking about safety.

To this effect, OPP officers will be out in full force patrolling Ontario’s highways, waterways and trails targeting aggressive drivers and marine operators to ensure everyone’s safety.

“We are asking everyone to join our efforts by acting responsibly while out enjoying the roads and waterways this upcoming holiday long-weekend” said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis.  “The OPP will continue to demonstrate our commitment to safe communities by being out in full force and targeting those who put others safety at risk”.

Numerous lives have been lost on our roadways and waterways this summer.  So far this year, 205 people have died in traffic related fatalities in Ontario on OPP patrolled roadways as compared to 199 in 2009.

Marine fatalities are down in 2010 to 17 to date as compared to 27 in 2009.  Despite this trend, the OPP continues to respond almost daily to calls from people in distress on our waterways.

“The increase in the number of fatalities from last year causes the OPP great concern” said Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey, Provincial Commander responsible for OPP Traffic Safety Programs.  “This is not acceptable and our stepped up patrols across the province will be addressing this issue by targeting the aggressive driving and boating behaviours that put the lives and safety of innocent people at risk.”

The OPP is calling on all motorists and boaters to keep safety as a priority this long weekend.  Slow down and be respectful of others.   Leave some extra time to get to your destination and keep extra space between you and other vehicles or vessels.  Let’s work together to make this final weekend of summer a safe one.
