(SD&G Detachment) SCAM ARTISTS (SD&G) – SD&G OPP would like to remind you
that this is the time of year that a certain type of criminal becomes active.
They usually work with three or four people in a paving or residential
maintenance crew. They could be from another area of the province or another
country. They will attend a residence and do a good job for a fair price,
then once the word has spread that they are a reputable group, the less than
professional work comes into play. These criminals target older and vulnerable people. They
are pushy and will go to great lengths to secure a job and payment before the
work is completed. They use tactics that make people feel that they have to
have the maintenance done, and on completion the home owner is far from satisfied. The SD&G OPP wants to advise our residents that
nothing has to be done under pressure. Always ask for a list of other
satisfied customers in the area. They should be able to provide this along
with a written estimate for the job you want completed. Get more than one
estimate. If you are not sure, consult a family member or close
friend about the work and the price that is being suggested. If you feel the
people attending your property are trying to intimidate you and are putting
pressure on you, ask them to leave. Write down any information you may
observe about their description, number of people, and the vehicles that they
are using, especially a licence plate. Call 888-310-1122 to report them to
the OPP immediately. There are many excellent, reputable contractors in our
area. Make sure you make an informed choice before allowing anyone to do work
for you. Remember, you are the home owner and you decide what work
you want done and you choose the contractor to complete it. CONTACT: P.G. (Pete) Robertson Constable #6282 Media Relations Officer Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Detachment Tel: 613-534-2223, Fax: 613-534-2486 Cell # 613-360-0166 Peter.robertson@ontario.ca Please
