FROM: Grenville, SDG, Leeds Detachments         RELEASE: IMMEDIATELY
DE:      Highway Safety Division                                 PUBLICATION LE: May 1, 2008

OPP Charge Commercial Vehicle and Aggressive Drivers

OPP detachments in Eastern Region, which include SDG, Grenville and Leeds County with the OPP Highway Safety Division (HSD) are working together in the fight to reduce aggressive driving and collisions on Highway 401 between Lancaster and Gananoque.

On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, these officers were joined by the MTO as they targeted the scales and Gananoque area along the 401.

As a result of the day long initiative, officers laid 54 charges which included:

4 - seatbelt
46 - speeding
1 – drive - no licence (vehicle was towed)
1 – defective brakes
2 – other offences

One driver was issued a 12 hour suspension for registering a warn on the road side screening device.

8 - commercial vehicles were subject to full mechanical inspections, in which 6 were placed out of service for various mechanical problems from loose u-bolts and bald tires to improperly adjusted brakes.

Due to the increase in major incidents on our highways, drivers can expect to see OPP officers joining forces regularly…so drive safe, be attentive and slow down!

Drivers who are traveling over the posted speed limits are a danger to themselves and other motorists. As their speeds increase, so too does their stopping distance, which further increases the likelihood of them being involved in a major incident.

Safe driving begins with you.  Everyone’s life depends on it!
