TEENS IN DISTRESS ON LAKE HURON LOCATED SAFE

(PLYMPTON – WYOMING, ON)  Two teens that jumped from what was thought to be a disabled watercraft more than 1 mile out into Lake Huron successfully swam to shore.

On the 1st of September, 2010, at around 2:30pm, three teen girls were riding a personal watercraft out in the waters of Lake Huron. While approximately a mile from the west shore of the lake, the vessel is reported to have started to sink.

The two passengers, age 16 and 17 got off the vessel and into the water. Both were wearing approved life jackets.

The driver, a 17 year old Brights Grove teen was able to manoeuvre the watercraft back to shore while the passengers proceeded to swim back toward shore.

An adult on shore was informed of what had happened and 9-1-1 was called.  Determining that the watercraft was sea worthy, he used it to go out to search for the pair.  He was unable to locate them.

OPP, RCC Trenton and the U.S Coast Guard mobilized vessels and aircraft to search for the two.

Approximately 45 minutes later, an officer scanning the shore found the pair swimming to the shore. He was able to assist them from the water.  They then boarded a private boat and were returned to their group.

Although tired from their swim, the pair were not injured.

BEWARE OF INTIMIDATING PHONE SCAM

(CORUNNA, ON)  Lambton OPP are warning residents to be aware of a phone scam where the caller intimidates the victim by reporting their property will be confiscated.

On the 31st of August, 2010 at around 7:30pm, a 69 year old year old Corunna woman was called by a male person reporting he worked for MasterCard.

He indicated to her that she owed a sum of money on her Mastercard that she must pay in full or have personal possessions confiscated.

The caller accurately indicated a recent outstanding amount which would indicate that he had obtained that information by other means.

Fortunately, the woman refused to divulge any further information, hung up and called police.

Scammers will use whatever means to obtain personal information.

They will go as far as digging through garbage to find credit card statements, ATM withdrawal slips and receipts.  It may also have been a person that has had access to your home, legitimate or otherwise that has obtained that information.

When disposing of personal documents, be sure to always shred anything that has personal information included on it. Good housekeeping also means filing documents so they are not left openly displayed in your home.

PRESCRIPTION CAPSULES STOLEN FROM VEHICLE CAN HAVE EXTREME SIDE AFFECTS

(ST CLAIR TWP, ON)   Lambton OPP are warning the public that prescription capsules that were stolen from a vehicle in the Courtright area can cause extreme side affects if taken by an unsuspecting person.

It is alleged that sometime between the evening of the 31st of August, 2010 and this morning; thieves entered into a locked vehicle on Thompson St and stole two prescription pill bottles belonging to the owner.

Contained in the bottles were 18 -150mg capsules of Venlafaxine. And another 9 – 300mg tablets of Wellbutrin.

Both medications are anti-depressants.

Although both medications have similar side affects, police are especially concerned with the Venlafaxine. If taken by a person, even for a short period of time can cause extreme side affects. It can cause dizziness, irritability and insomnia if the recipient stops taking them.

In extreme cases, it can also cause the taker to suffer severe depression and contemplate taking their own life.

The anti-depressant, when combined with other controlled substances such as amphetamine or methamphetamine can cause risk of “serotonin syndrome”.

“Serotonin syndrome” is a potentially life-threatening drug reaction that causes the body to have too much serotonin, a chemical produced by nerve cells.

The Venlafaxine capsules are described as being reddish brown in colour with 150 and the letter “N” marked on the outside of each caplet.

The Wellbutrin is described as being a white, round coated tablet, with the marking of WXL 300 etched on the face.

OPP STEPPING UP ENFORCEMENT for UPCOMING LABOUR DAY Weekend

(ORILLIA, ON) – As the hot days of summer draw to a close and people prepare to celebrate the final long weekend of the season, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists and boaters traveling on OPP patrolled roadways, waterways and trails during the Labour Day weekend that they should not be taking any time off from thinking about safety.

To this effect, OPP officers will be out in full force patrolling Ontario’s highways, waterways and trails targeting aggressive drivers and marine operators to ensure everyone’s safety.

“We are asking everyone to join our efforts by acting responsibly while out enjoying the roads and waterways this upcoming holiday long-weekend” said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis.  “The OPP will continue to demonstrate our commitment to safe communities by being out in full force and targeting those who put others safety at risk”.

Numerous lives have been lost on our roadways and waterways this summer.  So far this year, 205 people have died in traffic related fatalities in Ontario on OPP patrolled roadways as compared to 199 in 2009.

Marine fatalities are down in 2010 to 17 to date as compared to 27 in 2009.  Despite this trend, the OPP continues to respond almost daily to calls from people in distress on our waterways.

“The increase in the number of fatalities from last year causes the OPP great concern” said Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey, Provincial Commander responsible for OPP Traffic Safety Programs.  “This is not acceptable and our stepped up patrols across the province will be addressing this issue by targeting the aggressive driving and boating behaviours that put the lives and safety of innocent people at risk.”

The OPP is calling on all motorists and boaters to keep safety as a priority this long weekend.  Slow down and be respectful of others.   Leave some extra time to get to your destination and keep extra space between you and other vehicles or vessels.  Let’s work together to make this final weekend of summer a safe one.

SPEED – THE FASTER YOU GO, THE HARDER YOU HIT

Lambton OPP are warning motorists that driving a motor vehicle is a serious responsibility that requires the utmost care and attention.  This is following recent preventable crashes where several vehicle occupants have sustained long term critical injuries.

Recently, a crash on Highway 402 on the 21st of August, 2010, has left three persons including a 7 and a 10 year old with critical injuries. A second single vehicle crash that occurred on Friday, August 27, 2010, on Oil Heritage Road has left a driver in critical condition and his passenger with multiple injuries.

In both of these crashes, excessive speed was found to be a contributing factor.

With the responsibility of driving, there are many things we cannot control. Things such as what another driver may do, the weather conditions, mechanical failure of a tire or vehicle part, will an animal dart into your path or the reaction time of the driver.

One thing we have total control of is the speed we operate our vehicle at.

When a vehicle car is travelling at an excessive speed, a driver will have less time to identify hazards and react to what is happening around them. It takes vehicles a greater distance to stop from higher speeds, and if there is a crash, the injuries will be more severe.

It is a fact that crashes related to driving over the speed limit are prevalent from April through the fall.

Staff Sgt Chris Martin, Manager of Operations with the Lambton OPP says” Road safety here in Lambton County is paramount to protect all road users from injury or far worse, even death.  In an effort to prevent further carnage on Lambton County roads, our officers will be stepping up enforcement and charging those drivers that show disregard for their safety or that of others.”

He goes on to say” If motorists were to adhere to the following tips, then we will reduce overall collisions, prevent injuries and save lives.”

Know the limit, do the limit.

Continually monitor your speed.

Use your cruise control on the highway.

Adjust your speed for the weather, road

and/or traffic conditions.

Set a good example.

Be nice to your pocket book - save on gas,

tickets, your license and your insurance!

 Leave earlier, get there safer.

(LAMBTON SHORES, ON)   Lambton OPP Safe Streets Unit report that they located and destroyed a plot of 6 full grown marihuana plants that were being cultivated on a rural property on Kennedy Line near Jericho Road. The seized drugs had an estimated street value of $6,000.

Police report that this is the time of year when plots such as these are reaching maturity.

It is estimated that there are thousands of plants presently being grown in corn fields, in bush lots and along streams that will soon be harvested by their criminal farmers.

When cultivated, this product will hit the streets of Lambton County and beyond, supplying thousands with the illicit drug

If you know of any area where marihuana is being cultivated or who is responsible for this activity, you are asked to call police or Crimestoppers.

We ask that you don’t approach these plots, since history has shown that some areas may be “booby trapped” and large plots are even guarded by armed sentries.

The more marihuana that police can destroy before it ends up on the streets, the better.

LOCK IT OR LOSE IT

Lambton OPP officers want to remind residents to lock your vehicles, outbuildings and residences.  So far this morning, we have received 3 calls for service where the victims have left easy access to their valuables in unlocked parked vehicles.  We cannot stress enough that you must take a few extra minutes to ensure your vehicles, residence and outbuilding doors and windows are locked.

Please don’t leave valuables in your parked vehicles.  Often thieves are watching you stash the important items under the seat, in the glove box or in the trunk. Once you leave the area, they then help themselves to your items.  Do not store your wallets or electronic devices including cell phones and GPS systems in your vehicles overnight.  You are just asking to have these items stolen when you don’t take them inside.  Also, check your vehicle owner’s manual or talk to your mechanic to see if your vehicle has a lockout lever or switch that secures the trunk from being opened from the passenger compartment.  Ensure fold down rear seats are secured by their locking mechanisms as well before securing items in the trunk.

Take the extra time to lock it up so you don’t lose it!
