Vandalism to Corunna School – Provincial Curfew will be Enforced

(St Clair Twp, ON)  Sometime between Friday, June 26th and Monday, June 29th, culprits attended at St Josephs School, 535 Birchbank, Corunna.

They broke windows to an exterior shed, outside lighting and managed to gain access to the roof here they tore shingles off and damaged roof vents.

The vandalism is clearly the act of teens.

It is because of this behaviour that causes OPP to once again invoke the Provincial Curfew. Criminal behaviour by teens unsupervised by parents or who have parents that are blissfully unaware will not be tolerated.

There has been an increase in the number of thefts from vehicles, damage to property by

spray painting, burning or breaking.  No area of the County is devoid of being affected.

In an effort to curb this type of criminal behaviour, Lambton OPP are warning teens and parents alike that they will be enforcing the Provincial Curfew under authority of the Child and Family Services Act.

The Act states that:

:  between the hours of midnight and 6:00am,

:  if a child apparently or actually under 16 years of age

:  are in a public place

:  without a person over 18 years ( authorized by parents )

:  Police may apprehend that child without warrant

as a”Child in Need of Protection”

When a child is apprehended, the parents will be contacted and be required to pick up the child.

If it is alleged that they (age 12 to 17 years) have committed a criminal offence, they will be subject to criminal charges and subsequent consequences under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Parents:  It is your responsibility to know where your children are at all times.  If they report that they are staying at a friend, be sure that this is communicated between parents so that you know that to be the case. If I was a parent with children under 16 years, I certainly wouldn’t want to be called in the early morning hours if my child was apprehended by police.
