Beware of “Emergency Scam”

(WYOMING, ON)  Citizens are once again warned not to respond immediately to calls reporting a family member is in financial trouble.  This following an incident where a Wyoming couple was scammed for over $4,400 dollars.

This type of scam commonly referred to as the “Emergency Scam” is where a call is made to a friend or family member of a person. The caller identifies themself as a relation or acquaintance and that they are in legal or medical distress.

They ask the victim to send money via Western Union to a recipient to assist their loved one in securing their freedom or pay for immediate medical care. The money is sent and the thief is never heard from again.

The most recent case commenced on the 3rd of February, 2010 when a phone call was made to the Wyoming couple. The male caller identified himself as the grandson of the couple who they have not seen in approximately 3 years. He reports that he has been arrested by police in Montreal and requires immediate funding for legal fees. Instructions are given that the money be sent through Western Union and would be picked up by the lawyer.

The couple obtained cash from their bank and sent it as directed. A follow up call is then made to the couple by a man indicating he is the lawyer and asking if the money has been sent.

The couple became suspicious and attempted to locate their grandson. He was found to be residing in Toronto and had never been in Montreal.

Persons that receive calls of this nature must first determine if the call is legitimate.

Scammers commonly use various means to obtain information such as Facebook, 411.ca, social networking sites and genealogy sites find out names, relatives and phone numbers. The more information someone puts out on a computer, the more strangers know about you and your acquaintances.

ROAD CONDITIONS DON’T CAUSE COLLISIONS – DRIVERS DO

(LAMBTON COUNTY, ON)  With only a dusting of snow that the County experienced over night, OPP were busy dealing with as many as 7 collisions where vehicles left snow covered roadways.

In one case, a single vehicle roll over crash on 402 near Mandaumin Rd sent a 34 year old Grand Bend man to hospital withy minor injuries.

In the other cases, there was property damage not only to the vehicles but also road signs and traffic signal standards.

Where the vehicles were well off the road and not impacting other motorists, they were left until conditions improved and they could be towed.

A light dusting of snow can change road conditions quickly. Winter is not over, adjust your driving to the conditions you are experiencing. Above all – SLOW DOWN. It may be the difference between getting to your destination late or getting there at all.
