POLICE
WEEK – MAY 11 TO 17, 2008
Police
Week in Ontario is an annual event dedicated to promoting
crime prevention, recognition and awareness of policing services in the
community. Since 1970, Police Week has
been observed in May to coincide with Peace Officers Memorial Day, recognized
internationally on May 15th.
The
chosen theme for the week, “Working
with today’s youth to build safer communities” will promote positive interaction
between police and young people. is This theme ties
in with the OPP Vision of “Safe
communities, Secure Ontario.”
Officers
within the Ontario Provincial Police interact with youth and
adults in many different ways both in the communities and schools they
police. Police officers are part of
our community and have very important jobs; working hard to prevent crimes
and making sure everyone follows the rules.
They are
here to help you, your family, your friends, your neighbours and every person
who lives, works or visits Ontario.
Our police officers work on building healthy and trusting
relationships with people of all ages.
Within
the Killaloe/Whitney OPP Detachment area, you can
look for officers in your community interacting with youth through school
visits and presentations, traffic stops, lockdown drills and visit our booth
on Bay Days on May 17 to wrap up the week.
Keeping
our communities and youth safe is everyone’s responsibility. Working together we are stronger and
safer.
TORCH
RUN – LAST CALL
Two schools
have taken the challenge to have every family donate a Toonie
toward Special Olympics – who will it be…St. Casmir’s or
Sherwood? Only time will tell and time
is running short! Eganville
residents have taken up the “Torch Run Challenge,” as the final
call for support goes out before the Torch passes through on Wednesday, May
21st, at 1:30pm. The
run itself will start at the Legion field area, through town ending at the
visitor information area.
The
Special Olympics ‘convoy’ will be carrying the Torch through Eastern Ontario before its final leg into the
opening of the Olympic Games in Oshawa on May 29th. Thank you to all who are continuing to
support the “Toonies for Torches”
campaign. Check out the OPP booth at
Bay Days in Barry’s Bay on Saturday, May 17th for more
information if you haven’t heard about the Law Enforcement Torch
Run.
CANADA ROAD SAFETY WEEK – MAY 13 TO 19, 2008
The Ontario Provincial Police under the
direction of Commissioner Fantino, is committed to “Saving lives on Ontario’s highways, trails and waterways through professionalism,
leadership and visibility.” To that end, the week
of May 13 to 19, 2008 has been designated as Canada Road Safety Week. Officers across the province will be
actively enforcing all rules of the road with special emphasis on impaired
driving, seat belt offences and aggressive driving (racing, careless, failure

Please remember during this busy time of
year when many people are travelling to cottages or to visit loved ones, we
all have the right to arrive safe and arrive alive. Slow down, leave plenty of room between you
