Media Conference- Cobourg Detachment
This past week displays and activities have been set up
all across Ontario in recognition of “Police Week” The theme this
year is communicating with youth to create a safer community and that
includes Marine and ATV safety. Alnwick Haidimand Community Policing
Committee and Northumberland OPP have a week long display at Northumberland
Mall in Cobourg, with lots of free pamphlets,
Northumberland OPP has acquired two new all terrain
vehicles. In the past the detachment borrowed ATVs from a neighboring
detachment or had the SAVE team do patrols. Now with new machines, more
officers will be trained and increased patrols will be made possible.
A media conference will be held at Cobourg OPP Detachment
at 11:00am tomorrow, Friday the 16th of May. All media are invited
to attend. Inspector Doug Borton will be on hand to speak about OPP
initiatives as the summer once again gets into full swing. The new ATVs will
be on display as well. Your assistance in promoting community safety will be
appreciated.

BOY ON BIKE HAS CLOSE CALL WITH TRAIN
(Brighton)
An eleven year old
boy on his way home from school today was lucky to escape injury after the
front of his bicycle was struck by a Via train.
At about 3 p.m. at the railway crossing at Prince Edward St. in Brighton, the youth had stopped for a westbound
train which was traveling at 100 km/h.
Although the
crossing arms and signals were working properly, the youth managed to leave
his front wheel partially on the track as the train passed by hitting the
bike.
Via staff,
firefighters and paramedics searched the area until the boy and his mother
returned to the scene where he was very shaken but unharmed.

ONTARIO
PROVINCIAL POLICE TAKING PART
IN ANNUAL NATIONAL ROAD
SAFETY WEEK CAMPAIGN
(Northumberland) – All 165 Ontario Provincial Police
detachments, including Northumberland, are taking part in the annual Canada
Road Safety Week campaign aimed at making our roads the safest in the world.
This year’s campaign runs from 12:01 a.m. on May 13 to 11:59
p.m. on May 19.
“The goal of Canada Road
Safety Week is to increase public compliance with safe driving measures and,
ultimately, to save lives,” OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino said.
“We will be targeting aggressive drivers, those who drink and drive and
those who don’t buckle up. We will also be watching for motorists who
don’t slow down and, where possible, move over when passing an
emergency vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road with its emergency
lights flashing.”
Last year in Ontario,
451 people were killed in crashes on roads patrolled by the OPP. Transport Canada
statistics for 2006, the last full year available, indicate that 2,889 people
were killed in collisions across the country and another 15,281 were
seriously injured.
The “Move Over Legislation” isn’t new,
it came into effect in April 2003. The OPP saw a need for strict enforcement
of this legislation. Since November of 2007, six OPP officers have been
involved in incidents where they were hit by a vehicle or their cruiser was
hit while they were parked on the side of the road with emergency lights on.
Safety of emergency services personnel is paramount whether it is police, fire
or EMS.
“For many
years, the OPP, along with police agencies across the country, have
collaborated to raise the awareness regarding issues of public safety on our
roads,” Inspector Doug Borton said. “We also use this campaign to
demonstrate our commitment to public safety and community wellness.”
Canada Road Safety Week supports Canada’s Road
Safety Vision 2010, a plan to make Canada’s
roads the safest in the world by 2010.
