OPP STEPPING UP ENFORCEMENT for UPCOMING LABOUR DAY Weekend

(ORILLIA, ON) – As the hot days of summer draw to a close and people prepare to celebrate the final long weekend of the season, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists and boaters traveling on OPP patrolled roadways, waterways and trails during the Labour Day weekend that they should not be taking any time off from thinking about safety.

To this effect, OPP officers will be out in full force patrolling Ontario’s highways, waterways and trails targeting aggressive drivers and marine operators to ensure everyone’s safety.

“We are asking everyone to join our efforts by acting responsibly while out enjoying the roads and waterways this upcoming holiday long-weekend” said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis.  “The OPP will continue to demonstrate our commitment to safe communities by being out in full force and targeting those who put others safety at risk”.

Numerous lives have been lost on our roadways and waterways this summer.  So far this year, 205 people have died in traffic related fatalities in Ontario on OPP patrolled roadways as compared to 199 in 2009.

Marine fatalities are down in 2010 to 17 to date as compared to 27 in 2009.  Despite this trend, the OPP continues to respond almost daily to calls from people in distress on our waterways.

“The increase in the number of fatalities from last year causes the OPP great concern” said Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey, Provincial Commander responsible for OPP Traffic Safety Programs.  “This is not acceptable and our stepped up patrols across the province will be addressing this issue by targeting the aggressive driving and boating behaviours that put the lives and safety of innocent people at risk.”

The OPP is calling on all motorists and boaters to keep safety as a priority this long weekend.  Slow down and be respectful of others.   Leave some extra time to get to your destination and keep extra space between you and other vehicles or vessels.  Let’s work together to make this final weekend of summer a safe one.

BACK TO SCHOOL

(CALEDON, ON.) – A commercial on television calls it “the most wonderful time of the year”, as students and teachers prepare to usher in a new school year after one of the most beautiful summers in recent memory.

For officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Caledon Detachment there can be no more important time to urge drivers to slow down and to watch for school buses.    As the school year gets underway, drivers will need to pack a little extra patience as many young children will be taking the bus for the first time.  This means they might require extra time boarding and departing the bus, until they are familiar with the routine.

Some important safety tips for students include but are not limited to:

Walk, never run to or from the bus

Wait for the bus at a safe place away from the road

Listen to the bus driver for instructions about getting on and off the bus

If you can’t see the driver, the driver can’t see you

Never walk or play behind a vehicle

Never reach under the bus for something you drop

Sit still while the bus is moving

Look and listen both ways to be sure it is safe before you cross the street

Drivers are reminded that officers will be closely monitoring school zones and school buses so please be prepared to stop, in both directions, when a school bus is stopped with its overhead lights flashing.  Even multi-lane roadways such as Highway 9 and 10 and Regional Road 50 require all drivers to stop for the school bus in both directions.

Failing to stop for a school bus can result in a charge under the Highway Traffic Act which carries a set fine of $490.00 and six demerit points.

Additionally, parents are reminded to avoid parking in school bus drop-off zones and designated fire routes.

VEHICLES DAMAGED AND PURSES STOLEN IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS

“Predictable is Preventable”

(CALEDON, ON.) – The Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding residents of the importance of removing valuables, especially purses and wallets from vehicles, after two recent incidents were reported to the police.

On Friday August 20, 2010 at 3:00pm officers attended the parking lot of a local golf course after the owner returned to her vehicle to find a window had been smashed and a purse stolen.  The purse contained a wallet, identification, cell phone and a small quantity of money.  The vehicle had only been left in the parking lot for a short period time when the theft occurred.

The second incident occurred at a local banquet facility and was reported to police on Sunday August 22, 2010 at 10:20pm.  Two purses were stolen out of a vehicle while the owners were attending a wedding reception.  The vehicle was locked at the time.

It is possible that the thieves in both incidents were already in the parking lot when the unsuspecting victims parked their cars.   Police are encouraging residents to be aware of their surroundings when parking their vehicle.  If someone seems out of place or is acting suspiciously, trust your instincts and report it to the OPP by calling 1-888-310-1122 or *OPP on most cell phones.

Remember the best protection is always prevention.  Purses, wallets, cell phones, GPS units and other items of value, if left in plain-view, regardless of whether the vehicle is locked or not, may entice some individuals to damage your vehicle in order to steal your valuables.  Remove your valuables, lock them in the trunk or leave them at home.

Lock it or Lose it!

Police are asking anyone with information about these incidents to contact Caledon OPP at 905-584-2241 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  You can submit information online at www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.  Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display and you will remain anonymous.  Being anonymous, you will not testify in court and your information may lead to a cash reward of up to $2,000.00.

(CALEDON, ON.) – On Wednesday August 11, 2010 at 9:45am a speeding BMW caught the attention of officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Caledon Detachment.

The officers were travelling northbound on Highway 10 north of Mistywood Drive in Caledon Village when a southbound BMW was observed to be travelling 136 kilometres per hour in an 80 kilometre per hour zone.

When the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver turned westbound on Charleston Sideroad and attempted to evade the officers by quickly entered a parking lot behind a local business.  The driver then accelerated across a patch of grass and re-entered Highway 10 travelling southbound at a high rate of speed which caused several drivers to suddenly brake in order to miss the BMW.

At the intersection of Highway 10 and Olde Base Line Road the driver lost control of the vehicle, which entered the southeast ditch and came to rest against a fence.

The driver was immediately arrested by the responding officers.

As a result, twenty-nine year old Andre STUBBS of Mississauga was charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Flight from Police and Fail to Comply with Recognizance along with several Highway Traffic Act offences.
