Detachment PRESS RELEASE:
10 May 2008
NOTTAWASAGA OPP’S LOCK IT OR LOSE IT LAUNCH RESULTS
(Nottawasaga OPP, ON) In light of the significant number of
reported thefts from vehicles in Nottawasaga OPP’s area (majority in
the Town of New Tecumseth,) over
the past
couple of months, the decision to launch the “Lock
it or Lose it” program in their detachment
area on Saturday May 10th, 2008 in Alliston
and Tottenham certainly demonstrated as
to “why” the incident numbers are what they
are.
With 10 volunteers from the Alliston Community Policing
Committee, 5 Nottawasaga OPP
Auxillary Officers and Nottawasaga OPP’s Community
Service Officer Constable Melody
Tourigny, 638 vehicles were checked and tagged with the
Lock it or Lose it Crime Prevention
Inspection cards.
60% of the 638 vehicles checked received a
“congratulations” card as
the vehicles were found locked,
keys removed, windows closed and valuables out of sight.
However, a disappointing 40% fell into categories of
vehicles found unlocked, windows open,
valuables in plain view (some well within plain
“snatch and grab view” with windows down),
and some with keys in vehicles.
What kind of property did we find in plain view and some
easily available for the “one
stop shopping”?
Lots of purses, blue tooth telephone, leather jacket,
speakers/woofers, cars seats,
CB radio,
transponders, brief case, computer printer, CD’s, cameras, tools, power
tools, keys,
Personal documents, MP3 players, IPODS, cell phones,
expensive sunglasses, loose change,
GPS’s, handicap permit (veh unlocked / windows
down); pocket watch, groceries, watch, satellite
Radio (Sirrus), Parcels, brand new (still in box) mini
refrigerator (veh window down), several dogs
(and owners were cautioned as temperatures are beginning
to rise) and one child…yes...you read
correctly – a seven year old child found alone in a
vehicle unlocked, all windows down.
Luring a child that age from a vehicle that is completely
insecure isn’t difficult without
having to cause attention to oneself. Please be cautious, do NOT leave children
unattended in any
motor vehicle.
Nottawasaga OPP’s objective: reduce the 40% significantly !!!! But it can’t be done without the
community’s co-operation and diligence in order to do so. We are requesting you adhere to the
advice provided within the Lock it and Lose it
Program: lock your vehicles always,
remove keys,
windows closed (including sunroof), valuables out of sight
(or better yet – remove from vehicle if
possible). Protect
your vehicle and your property so as not to become a victim of a preventable
crime.
Majority of the members of the community encountered
during this local launch of the Lock it
Or Lose it Campaign were very pleased to see us out
creating awareness, educating and reminding vehicle owners and operators of
messages they already know. Even a
majority of those who were
part of the 40%
that didn’t receive the
congratulations inspection card were sheepishly pleased to
witness our efforts.
Some however were not.
They were openly angry and seemed almost offended by our discoveries.
It may be that the message may not reach these individuals
which is unfortunate.
Nottawasaga OPP cares about your safety. We ask that you care about your safety too.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the
OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers is completely anonymous and
does not subscribe to call display.

of up to $2,000.

IN ANNUAL NATIONAL ROAD
SAFETY WEEK CAMPAIGN
(Nottawasaga OPP, ON)
– All 165 Ontario Provincial Police detachments, including Nottawasaga OPP,
are taking part in the annual Canada Road Safety Week campaign aimed at
making our roads the safest in the world.
This year’s campaign runs from 12:01 a.m. on May 13 to 11:59
p.m. on May 19.
“The goal of Canada Road
Safety Week is to increase public compliance with safe driving measures and,
ultimately, to save lives,” OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino said.
“We will be targeting aggressive drivers, those who drink and drive and
those who don’t buckle up. We will also be watching for motorists who
don’t slow down and, where possible, move over when passing an
emergency vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road with its emergency
lights flashing.”
Last year in Ontario,
451 people were killed in crashes on roads patrolled by the OPP. Transport Canada
statistics for 2006, the last full year available, indicate that 2,889 people
were killed in collisions across the country and another 15,281 were
seriously injured.
“For many
years, the OPP, along with police agencies across the country, have
collaborated to raise the awareness regarding issues of public safety on our
roads,” Nottawasaga OPP ‘s Community Service Officer Melody
Tourigny said. “We also use this campaign to demonstrate our commitment
to public safety and community wellness.
Nottawasaga OPP’s Traffic Unit and General Patrol Officers will
be focusing on the aggressive drivers on our highways and the already
identified traffic complaint areas throughout our townships of Essa, Town of
New Tecumseth and in Adjala-Tosorontio.”

Tips for Dealing with High Winds and Severe Rainfall
(Nottawasaga OPP, ON)
In light of the unfavourable weather conditions we have been subjected
to recently, below are some tips to assist you in torrential storm
situations.
When high winds and significant amounts of rainfall are
expected, Emergency Management Ontario advises the public to follow these
safety tips.
Before the storm
• Listen to your local radio station for the most
up-to-date storm information.
• Store or tie down all outdoor furniture, garbage
cans, lawn ornaments or anything else that may blow around.
• If possible, trim dead or rotting branches that
might be especially susceptible to high winds and rain. Check the drainage
around the house to reduce the possibility of flooding after a heavy rain.
• Have a meeting place arranged or some way of
communicating with family members who may be at work, school or away from
home when a storm hits.
• Have a supply of water, food, clothing, blankets,
medication and first-aid and tool kits as well as flashlights, batteries and
a portable radio.
During the storm
• If winds become extremely high, take shelter in a
basement, storm cellar or a closet beneath stairs. If none of these are
available, sit underneath a sturdy piece of furniture on the ground floor in
the centre of the building away from outside walls and windows. Be sure you
discuss the shelter area with your family.
• If you are outdoors, take shelter immediately -
preferably in a building. If there is lightning and you cannot get inside,
lie in a depressed area such as a ditch or culvert, but never under a tree.
If caught in the open, do not lie flat on the ground - sit in a frog position
and lower your head.
• Do not approach any downed power lines. If you are
in your car and a power line falls on it, remain in your car. Do not attempt
to get out until emergency crews arrive to help.
• Avoid driving through flooded roads and underpasses.
The water may be a great deal deeper than it looks and you could get stuck.
Also avoid crossing bridges if the water is high and flowing quickly.
• Use caution when driving because traffic lights
may not operate. If the traffic lights are out treat the intersection as a
four-way stop.
• Do not use 9-1-1 unless it is a genuine emergency.
• Listen to local radio for emergency information.
• Use proper candleholders. Never leave candles
unattended and keep them away from combustible materials.
• Check on elderly or disabled neighbours. If you
need assistance yourself, contact neighbours for help.
• If there is a power outage, keep your fridge and
freezer shut unless absolutely necessary. A full freezer can keep food frozen
for 24-36 hours if the door stays shut.
• Don't use charcoal, gas barbecues or home
generators indoors. They give off deadly carbon monoxide.

HIT BIG TIME OVER
WEEKEND WITH THEFTS FROM VEHICLES
(Town of New Tecumseth, ON) The trend continues to fester in
Nottawasaga OPP’s detachment area…thefts from unattended vehicles
in the Town of New Tecumseth and Essa Twp over this past weekend.
Street locations targeted included Mckeown Street in the
village of Beeton; Greenaway Street, Adeline Avenue, Gunning Crescent, Carter
Cresent, and Eastern Avenue in the village of Tottenham. In Essa Twp, only Edenbridge Drive was hit.
Some damage was done to some of the vehicles to gain entry
and many entered were effortless to do so – because the owners had left
them unlocked. Items stolen included
cash, large sum of Canadian Tire
money, wallet with identification and vehicle documents including insurance
papers and vehicle permits, and from one vehicle – an $800 Silver Nikon
Advantix camera.
The prime time of offence seems to be between 2:00 a.m.
and 4:00 a.m. while “most” people are asleep.
A professional can steal your vehicle in about 30
seconds. An unlocked vehicle or an
open window or door is an easy target.
Protect your vehicle from theft and protect your contents.
Lock the doors, close windows, pocket the keys when you
park your car. Park in a well lit
area. And never leave valuables in
plain view, and unless absolutely necessary, do not leave valuables in your
unattended vehicle.
Many residents are finding that they are LOSING IT,
BECAUSE THEY AREN’T LOCKING IT.
Nottawasaga OPP cares about your safety, and the security
of your property.

who just simply wouldn’t get the message when he was advised to behave

The officers were at the Tottenham Mall investigating an
unrelated incident. While doing so, the officers were approached by two
intoxicated males. One of the males became verbally abusive towards
police. The second male told the
first male to shut up and leave. The first male remained belligerent, yelling
profanities at the officers. His male
friend even attempted to get the abusive male to apologize to the officers
but to no avail.
The male was cautioned numerous times by the officers for
his conduct. He kept up his abuse towards police and was then yelling at
other people as well. The officers
arrested him for being intoxicated in a public place.
25 year old David COSMAN of the Town of New Tecumseth
remained in custody until he sobered up.

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL
POLICE CRACKDOWN ON SEATBELT USE A SUCCESS
Annual province-wide campaign by police services comes to
an end
(Nottawasaga OPP, ON) – The Ontario Provincial
Police checked more than 1.24 million vehicles during the annual spring
seatbelt initiative, which ended at midnight. Four people died as a result of
not wearing seatbelts during the province-wide campaign, which began April
16.
The OPP, which is responsible for about 70 per cent of the
province’s highways, laid 10,753 charges against drivers, 4,481 charges
against passengers and charged 274 drivers for not having a probably
installed child restraint.
Last year, 117 people were killed on roads patrolled by
the OPP as a result of not being buckled up, a 14.7 per cent increase over
2006. So far in 2008, 27 people not wearing seatbelts have died on
OPP-patrolled roads, a 28.9 per cent decrease over the same time last year,
when 38 people had been killed as a result of not being buckled up.
“Ontario has one of the highest compliance rates for
seatbelt use of any jurisdiction in North America,” OPP Commissioner
Julian Fantino said. “But there are still drivers out there who
don’t seem to get it. We had four people die during the campaign
because they weren’t buckled up. The few seconds it takes to buckle up
could be the difference between living and dying if you are involved in a
serious collision.”
In one incident, OPP stopped a passenger van in which 12
of the 15 people in it weren’t wearing seatbelts. The law calls for
vehicles to have one seatbelt for each passenger seat.
The OPP was also checking for improperly installed child
restraints or young children who weren’t in car seats at all. A
properly used child seat reduces a child’s risk of injury in a motor
vehicle collision by as much as 75 per cent, yet as many as 80 per cent of child
car seats are used incorrectly.
Municipal police services across the province were also
involved in the seatbelt campaign.

AND THE THEFTS FROM
CARS RAVE ON…
(Town of New Tecumseth, Essa Twp, ON) Nottawasaga OPP officers received more
reports of thefts of valuables from unattended motor vehicles over the
weekend of April 25 to April 27th, 2008 in the Town of New Tecumseth.
On April 25th, around 3:35 p.m. a complainant reported
that a 3 fold wallet brown in colour was stolen from their vehicle parked at
their residence in Tottenham. There
was no cash in the wallet but their mastercard was stolen and used at a beer
store and a gas station and tried at a third business premise without
success. A driver’s licence
remains outstanding as well from this theft.
This same complainant relayed to police that in past their vehicles
had been ransacked through and had loose change stolen. Continuous advice from Police in media releases
/ local newspapers in past regarding the Lock it or Lose it program - to not
leave valuables in vehicles (whether locked or not) appears to be taken lightly.
On April 26, 2008 around 2:30 p.m. in Essa Twp, on Alessio
Drive, police received a report of a
vehicle was broken into within the past week and stolen were that of numerous
CD’s and a digital camera.
On April 27th, 2008 around 9:15 a.m. the OPP received a
report of a theft of a 10 day permit stolen from the inside of a disabled
vehicle. A window of the vehicle had
been smashed to gain entry.
Nottawasaga OPP once again stresses “ protect your
auto and it’s contents.” A
few simple precautions can save you a lot of expense, grief and valuable time
to replace identification and articles.
Keep windows rolled up; lock your vehicle; never leave keys in your
vehicle; keep your vehicle registration and insurance papers on you at all
times, don’t leave them in your glove compartment; always park your vehicle in well-lit areas;
never leave valuables or packages in plain view in your vehicle – put
them in the trunk if you absolutely must leave wallets or identification or
valuables in the vehicle – otherwise try not to do so.
