OPP COMMITTED TO HAVING A SUSTAINED PRESENCE ON OUR ROADS
THIS LABOUR DAY WEEKEND!
(East Algoma) – This upcoming
Labour Day weekend officers of the East Algoma OPP
will be out patrolling our roads and highways.
“A
moments inattention can result in injury and death” sates
Inspector Mark Andrews – Traffic and Marine Commander, North East
Region. “Drivers are drifting across the centre line for whatever reason,
possibly distraction or fatigue and slamming into oncoming traffic. Drivers seem to let down their guard in
sunny weather and are less alert to what’s going on around them.”
Speeding, following too closely, improper lane changes,
improper passing, disobeying traffic control and failing to yield the right
of way are factors significantly in terms of the collisions investigated by
the OPP. Officers are urging motorists
to consider their driving habits and commit to changing behaviours that put
themselves and their family’s lives at risk.
Texting and use of cell phones is prohibited while
driving. 49% of adults say they have
been passengers in a car when the driver was sending or reading text messages
on their cell phone. Overall, 44% of
adults say they have been passengers of drivers who used the cell phone in a
way that put themselves or others in danger.
Inspector Percy Jollymore – Detachment Commander of
the East Algoma OPP would like to remind motorists
using the highways, that controlling your vehicle is your number one
priority. It only takes a split second
for your vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic or onto the shoulder, a split
second that could change your life forever.
Our goal is to do our best to ensure that everyone on our roads makes
it safely to their destination.
Have a Safe
Labour Day Weekend. Drive Safe, Slow
Down and Drive Sober!

BACK TO SCHOOL!
(Elliot Lake, Ont.) It’s that time of the year!!! BACK TO SCHOOL!! The first day back at school for students
in the East Algoma Area is September 7, 2010.
School bus
transportation is a safe way to travel and in Ontario over 80,000 children travel on school
buses. Most injuries occur outside the
school bus, as students are entering or exiting or crossing the street. Parents should ensure that they children
have a safe place to wait for the school bus. Remind them to wait for the bus
to come to a complete stop before approaching it. Also remind your children to BE AWARE OF
THE STREET TRAFFIC AROUND THEM at all times.
Motorist must keep
a safe distance away from a stopped school bus with the red overhead lights
flashing and stop arm extended. When
following a school bus, Ontario law requires you stop 20 meters behind the bus. When meeting a school bus in oncoming
traffic, stop far enough away to allow students to cross the road well ahead
of the bus bumper. REMEMBER regardless
of the posted speed limit, at any time of day, any day of the week, the law
applies…. SLOW DOWN in school zone areas.
School Crossing
Guard will be at their post assistance children to cross the street
safely. Motorists are reminded to stop
safely before the crossing and not to proceed through the crossing
until all children and the crossing guard has left the roadway.
“Working together
we can ensure a safe return for all students.” States Inspector Jollymore. “If need be leave a couple of
minutes earlier to ensure you arrive at your destination on time. Be patient and be safe!”
